Apparently Dalai Lama received a “U.S. Congressional Gold Medal,” which really annoyed China. I never liked Dalai Lama, but I have to give him credit for his talent for public relations. He could start a public relations consulting firm for other national leaders. It’s quite possible (and likely) that there is a master-mind behind Dalai Lama who is responsible for their success in public relations (equivalent of Karl Rove).
A few years ago, I read this book entitled “The Dragon in the Land of Snows: A History of Modern Tibet Since 1947”. I heard that Tibetans hated this book because it wipes out the myth the West has about Dalai Lama, Tibet and Tibetans (the image that they are saintly, passive, and defenseless people.). It’s hard to dismiss the book because it is written by a Tibetan. It becomes rather clear that you cannot squarely blame China for their conflict. China meant well, at least initially, and the conflict developed over time. It’s not like China invaded Tibet all of the sudden and slaughtered a bunch of people without a warning. Dalai Lama had a lot to do with what happened, because he was so young and inexperienced. Tibet too was a backward nation like China. In my view, the conflict was a result of both countries struggling to adapt to the modern world, like growing pains.

October 17th, 2007 at 6:47 pmWhy on earth would the Dalai Lama, who is widely acclaimed as a man of peace, lower himself by shaking hands with the world’s biggest warmonger, war criminal, the Butcher of Baghdad and Fallujah, George W. Bush? I just lost any shred of respect I had for the Dalai Lama.

December 6th, 2007 at 7:01 pmIf the dalai lama really wants what is best for his people …..He should let the Tibetans speak for themselves. If it is really that bad over there won’t the Tibetans take to the streets like in Myanmar/ Burma …He hasn’t been in Tibet for over how many years???? He doesn’t have an idea how the Tibetans live now …weather they are doing better or worse with the Communist rule..Power hungery????

He met with Angela Merkel too, didn’t he?
But to meet with “evildoer” bush… gaah o___O
I mean I can understand why it annoys China.
It is better when Tibet is under China’s control for them, if they start a war for example.

January 18th, 2008 at 2:43 amHey you guys really need to read some history of what has happened in Tibet. Why don’t they protest? Because 1000’s of people who have done so were imprisoned or killed. China did just invade, and in doing so they quite deliberately attempted to wipe out the culture by destroying temples, killing monks etc, sterilising women, and flooding the country with people from eastern China.

February 8th, 2008 at 1:58 amIt is incredulous that the people writing comments here think the Dalai Lama is so evil, etc.
The Dalai Lama lives a very simple life in exile in India, has been recognized internationally as a man of peace, received the Nobel Prize, and has advocated peaceful autonomy now in China.
All those on this comment who think otherwise, why aren’t you looking at the abysmal human rights record of Chinese authorities, the fact that China has ZERO democracy, and a fifty year track record of murdering opposition? I am also Chinese, but the worst thing is Chinese who become so nationalistic and hypocritical attacking others when their own government is unelected and certainly never speaks for the Chinese people…..blind defense of a country where you don’t even have a say in who your elected leaders are?!?! China has a great history, tradition, etc. but Chinese aren’t in a position to criticize when China itself is a dictatorship.
Give me a break. We Chinese have no right to think we speak for Tibetans in anyway as liberators, etc., we can’t even get our own house in order.

February 8th, 2008 at 7:57 pmJust when you think China might join in with civilized nations, you talk to liberal Chinese and they all hate the Dali Lama. At first I laughed it was so absurd then I realize they personally would beat him if they could get their hands on him. And these are the open minded Chinese working in the west! You realize just how brain washed Chinese people are in their education system. I feel embarrassed for them. They were taught bizarre things about America and Europe history many don’t dare mention in conversation but they still believe. China’s communist leaders have terrorized and murdered thousands of Tibetans in brutal suppressions of peaceful people. They purposely built a railroad into Tibet in order to ruin uniqueness of Tibet and sent hordes of Chinese to just take over. Yet nearly every Chinese person I’ve met where politics come up they go INSANE when Dali Lama is mentioned. They really believe he is a terrorist. It’s really bizarre.
And whatever you do, don’t mention that you think Taiwan has a right to be independent from China. Chinese people will freak out!!
